UAE Wage Protection System (WPS) — What Every Employer Must Know
The Wage Protection System (WPS) is a UAE Ministry of Human Resources electronic salary transfer system that ensures employees are paid on time, in full, and through a compliant bank or exchange house. It is mandatory for all private sector companies in UAE with employees.
Non-compliance with WPS is serious: Failure to pay salaries on time through WPS can result in ban from hiring new staff, suspension of business licence, and ultimately company closure. The Ministry monitors WPS in real time.
How WPS Works — Step by Step
- Step 1: Prepare your monthly payroll — calculate basic salary, allowances, deductions, and overtime for each employee
- Step 2: Generate the Salary Information File (SIF) — a structured CSV file in the exact MOHRE-mandated format
- Step 3: Upload the SIF to your bank or approved exchange house
- Step 4: Bank processes and credits all employee salaries on the same day
- Step 5: WPS system confirms payment — your company is marked compliant for that month
Timing: Salaries must be paid within 15 days of the end of the salary period. If your payment cycle is monthly (calendar month), salaries must be paid by the 10th of the following month.
End-of-Service Gratuity — UAE Law Explained
| Years of Service | Gratuity Entitlement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Less than 1 year | Nil | No gratuity for employment under 1 year |
| 1–5 years | 21 days basic salary per year | Based on last basic salary |
| More than 5 years | 30 days basic salary per year | First 5 years at 21 days, then 30 days per year after |
| Maximum cap | 2 years' total gross salary | Total gratuity capped at 2 years' basic salary equivalent |
Gratuity is calculated on basic salary only — not total package (excluding housing, transport, and other allowances). It must be accrued monthly in your books and paid on the last day of employment.
"We had a Ministry inspection. Our WPS records were wrong for 8 months."
A restaurant group with 45 employees had been processing salaries manually, submitting SIF files late, and incorrectly calculating gratuity accruals. When MOHRE inspected, they found 8 months of late WPS submissions and AED 180,000 in underaccrued gratuity. BookLean reconstructed all payroll records, corrected gratuity calculations, filed corrected SIF data, and implemented automated WPS processing going forward. The MOHRE case was closed without penalty after remediation.
